Open Lab Guidelines
The computer lab represents a great deal of
time, energy, and money from donors and the volunteers
who install, configure, and network the computers.
Without proper supervision, a Windows 95 computer can
only survive about 4 hours of use by children before
it refuses to operate.
At this point the machine may sit for 4 months until some
discouraged computer person volunteers to reinstall Win95
and all the software on it!
Therefore, use of the computer lab should follow these guidelines:
- No one is to use the lab unless a qualified
supervisor is present. Keys to the lab are carefully controlled -- do
not loan your key to anyone.
- No food or drink in the lab.
- The newer machines have StormWindows installed to
protect the system configuration. The password is NOT to
be given to minors. To install software you must
Unprotect - don't forget to ReProtect afterwards.
- The club does not provide uncontrolled Internet
access. Do not save Internet account passwords on
the system and do not give out the passwords (charges
are about $2.80 US per hour).
- There is an admission charge of $2EC per visit.
- Always ensure that the airco is off before leaving.
- No loaning of equipment or software from the lab (mice,
monitors, printers, software). What happened to our 2 copies
of Win95 on diskette? Now we have none! Anything small,
irresistable, and movable such as headphones or the
"Blue's Clues" CD, should be gathered up and stored in a secure place
at the end of a lab session.
- New software is only to be installed by qualified persons,
not beginners, and only after ensuring that adequate disk
space exists for the software. For people who would like
to learn to install software, we have a single designated "crash
and burn" machine.
- Student diskettes from outside are not to be inserted
in machines without virus scan/protection.
- No rough housing, no matter how exciting
the program. No grabbing for mice or headphones.
